Vernon Bailey
Public Contributor, Royal Marsden
Vernon Bailey is a retired Local Government Finance Manager, Principal Accountant, and Internal Auditor with over 32 years of Financial Management, Accounting and Internal Auditing Experience working in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Camden and Southwark.
In 2015, Vernon was diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer, and since then, he has become a true advocate for the NHS patient voice in clinical trials and cancer research studies from the initial planning and design stage to the final evaluation stage.
After receiving considerable training and development from Imperial College NHS Healthcare. Vernon has gained over 8 years’ experience of reading and reviewing medical and scientific researchers lay summaries, with the aim of improving NHS patients’ understanding, participation and involvement in cancer research studies.
Vernon Bailey is a member of the South East Cancer Help Centre (SECHC) Purley and the Errol McKellar MBE Foundation – Prostate Support Groups. He also volunteers as an NHS Patient Contributor for Kings College London PPI Cancer Research Study Group, Imperial College London NHS PPI Cancer Research Study Group, and the Royal Marsden NHS Hospital PPI Cancer Research Study Group. Vernon also regularly attends stakeholder events for cancer research oncology and clinical research studies.
In 2025 Vernon was elected as an NHS Patient Governor for Elsewhere in London on The Royal Marsden NHS Hospital – Council of Governors and he regularly meets quarterly with other NHS Elected Patient Governors and the Board of Directors Leadership Team.
Vernon Bailey’s main mentor is Professor Frank Chinegwundoh MBE, who is an outstanding and renowned and highly skilled Consultant Urologist based in London, who specializes in treating prostate cancer, benign prostate enlargement, erectile dysfunction a wide variety of other complicated urological conditions.
Professor Frank Chinegwundoh MBE is the Consultant Urologist and the Medical and Scientific Researcher who carried out the scientific research that provided evidence that Black Men of African and Afro- Caribbean descent carry a higher risk 1 in 4 of being diagnosed with prostate cancer compared with Men of other racial groups, which is 1 in 8.
Professor Chinegwundoh is currently Urology Lead Consultant at Newham University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, and past chairman of the Prostate Cancer Advisory Group. Professor Chinegwundoh serves as an honorary clinical senior lecturer at Queen Mary’s College, University of London and has been an honorary visiting Professor in the School of Health Sciences, City University, London since December 2014.
