Janette Dunkerley Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

After qualifying in 1994 from the University of Wales College of Medicine as a registered nurse with a BN (Hons) I started my nursing career at Manchester Royal Infirmary. In 1997, I took up a post as vascular nurse specialist and was introduced into the world of research.

In 1999 I commenced my first clinical research nurse role. After 12 years as working as a senior clinical research nurse and completing the master’s in clinical research at the University of Manchester, which provided me the opportunity to undertake my own research, I became the Matron for Research & Innovation (R&I) MFT.

In 2017 I became responsible for all the clinical research delivery staff at MFT when I was appointed Lead Nurse for R&I and in 2020, I was appointed Head of Nursing for R&I.

In March 2022, I had the undertook a seven-month secondment as Deputy Director of Nursing.  This provided me with a breadth of understanding of the operational functions of large hospital within MFT. It equipped me on my return to R&I, now appointed to Assistant Chief Nurse Research & Innovation for MFT, to understand greater how we need to embed research, engage with colleagues and create a passion in others for delivering world class research that has an impact at the patient’s bedside. I am the professional lead focusing on the quality of the patient experience through the delivery of high quality safe and effective clinical research nursing & midwifery care.

In 2024 I was also appointed as the Health & Care Director (NMAHP) for the NIHR Regional Research Delivery Network North West. This appointment enables me to support both academic and clinical research delivery across the North West.
